CHAPTER SEVEN

THE idea that she could well be out of her mind was one that surfaced in Jenny’s thoughts with niggling regularity throughout her first day back at work since Jamie’s return. Which wasn’t surprising, she thought as she made her way home rather later than usual that evening; it had been a weekend that would have driven even the most sane of people to distraction.

Yet even now there was an irrepressible excitement within her, jostling aside her perfectly justifiable feelings of exasperation with its tingling exhilaration.

They had fought and loved and laughed throughout the entire two days and, to the amazement of them both, their tiny nephew had positively thrived on the intensely charged atmosphere between them—chuckling delightedly in accompaniment to their laughter and merely gurgling with contentment on the single occasion their voices had risen to anger in his presence.

‘Perhaps he knows something we don’t,’ Jamie had murmured, his anger dispelled as he had taken both child and woman into his arms.

And the reason that she was undoubtedly out of her mind was that she had thrived on it too, she thought, a tinge of wariness creeping across her face as the building came into sight and she began searching in her pocket for her keys. And she was thriving solely because of that ultimately very dangerous technique she seemed to have acquired overnight—that of limiting the extent to which she was allowing her thoughts to roam.

It was the trembling of her hand as she inserted the key in the front door lock that pulled her up with a brutal sharpness. She was blocking out far too much, she told herself in sudden panic, and facing reality was an inevitability from which there was ultimately no escape.

She pushed open the door and walked slap into Jamie, standing in the hallway with Jonathan in his arms.

‘We’ve been watching and waiting for you for hours now,’ he complained with a grin.

Before she could utter a word, he leaned over and placed a welcoming and most enthusiastic kiss on her lips. It was an action that filled her with almost equal parts of surprise and pleasure.

‘We?’ she murmured unsteadily, having dragged her eyes from the twinkling green of his gaze towards the baby sound asleep in the nonchalant hold of strong, darkly tanned arms.

Already her pulses were racing out of control, she realised shakily, and then wondered at her own surprise at the kiss with which he had greeted her…he was always taking her by surprise, and often with casually affectionate, completely unselfconscious gestures such as that one.

‘Hey, Junior,’ he growled to the oblivious baby, ‘I thought the deal was that you’d stay awake for the home-coming!’ His darkly fringed eyes rose for an instant, hovering on Jenny, now removing her coat, before returning to the baby. ‘Though, to be fair, it was getting so late that even I was thinking of calling it a night.’

‘Jamie, it’s not even eight yet,’ she protested, though her heart had already begun sinking with the inescapable edge that had crept into his tone.
